Corpus Christi (KIII News) — The 10th annual Day of Giving kicks off Tuesday. It's a 24-hour event designed to help 50 Coastal Bend non-profits raise much-needed donations.
"Every day when we come to work, no matter what it is we're doing, the end result is somebody is going to get some help. Somebody's going to end up with something that they need. Because that's what we do," said Karen Selim, Executive Director of the Coastal Bend Community Foundation.
The Coastal Bend Community Foundation sponsors and operates the annual Day of Giving to benefit local charities.
"We have $900,000 in matching money, which our partners, which are predominately private foundations, have entrusted us with to give out," Selim said. "Also so that they're able to get $18,000 matched right away."
According to Selim, with a dedicated board and staff they have provided grants to some 600 organizations in the past 10 years.
"There are a lot of people in our area that do not have access to the things that we have, and a lot of people don't see that. However, there's a great deal of need in our community," Selim said.
Money collected during the Day of Giving goes to those in need.
"And the money gets used right away in our community to provide people that are really at risk. You know, medical care, child care, homeless, hungry, people that need our help," Selim said.
Selim feels there's no better job than the one she has.
"I tell people this is the best job in Corpus Christi. I mean, this is the best organization. I have the best job. I'm honored to be here and to be working for the Foundation, for the board," Selim said. "There's just nothing that's not good about the work that we do here."
